Seán Dunne was born in Waterford in 1956. Seán’s parents Richie and Maureen moved to no. 321 St. John’s Park around 1960 and he grew up there with his brothers Aidan and Brendan and sister Breda.
He then became a teacher but he discovered that it was not for him. He worked in Waterford Institute of Technology and Cork City Library. After writing some articles for the Sunday Tribune, he was offered a job with the Cork Examiner, as it was then called.
His most famous book is called “In My Father’s House” in which he tells us of his life growing up in St. John’s Park. Seán also wrote “The Road to Silence” and his first book of poetry was called “Lady in Stone”.
Seán died suddenly in Cork on 2nd August 1995 aged 39 years. He is buried in St. Gobnaits Graveyard in Ballyvourney, Co. Cork.
Every year he is remembered in the “Seán Dunne Literary Festival” which is organised by Waterford City Council. Last year’s winner was Seán Lonergan. This year our 6th class will be involved and we are really looking forward to it.
