Science Week

Science Week

As part of Science Week we are asking the 6th Class boys to do 1 of the following science experiments at home with the help of their parents.  We can’t wait to see the results!!

Here are the experiments we would like you to try out:

Homemade Volcano

You Will Need:
• A 500 ml empty plastic bottle
• A funnel
• 2 measuring cups
• 1 cup of baking soda
• 1 cup of vinegar
• 1 tsp of liquid dishwashing soap
• Food colouring
• Glitter

How To:
1. Put the bottle at the bottom of a sink and place the funnel in it.
2. Pour baking soda in the bottle through the funnel.
3. In the measuring cup, add the soap, food color and vinegar.
4. Add some glitter on the funnel on top of the baking soda and pour the vinegar
mix on top. The volcano will erupt from the bottle.

Rock Candy

You Will Need:
• A 15 cm long piece of string
• A pencil
• A paper clip
• A cup of water
• A glass jar
• 2 cups of sugar

How To:
1. Tie the string around the middle part of the pencil and tie the paper clip at the
end of the string.
2. Place the pencil on the top of the jar in such a way that the string is inside the
jar. Make sure the string does not touch the bottom or sides of the jar, and if it
does, roll it around the pencil a little more. It will help you understand how
much string needs to be rolled. Once you know the exact measurement, remove
it from the jar and keep aside.
3. Boil the water and add ¼thcup of sugar. Keep stirring till it dissolves. Once it
dissolves, add another ¼th cup of sugar and stir till it dissolves. Keep doing this
till the sugar is finished, but make sure you first dissolve the sugar and then add
the fresh one.
4. Pour the sugar solution inside the jar and fill it to the top. Now place the paper
clip and the string in the sugar mix in such a way that the string is positioned in
the middle of the jar.
5. Let it cool and stay undisturbed for about a week, after which the crystal candy
will be ready.

Make An Egg Without A Shell

You Will Need:
• 16 ounces vinegar
• 2 glasses
• Raw eggs

How To:
1. Slowly place the egg inside the glass and fill it with vinegar to cover it
2. It can take about 12 to 24 hours for the shell of the egg to dissolve away.
3. Take the egg out the next day by gently tilting the glass to pour out the liquid.
4. All you will be left with is a naked egg without a shell.

Make your own Lava Lamp

You Will Need:
• A clean 1 liter clear soda bottle
• 3/4 cup of water
• Vegetable Oil
• Fizzing tablets (such as Alka Seltzer)
• Food coloring

How To:
1. Pour the water into the bottle.
2. Use a measuring cup or funnel to slowly pour the vegetable oil into the bottle
until it’s almost full. You may have to wait a few minutes for the oil and water
3. Add 10 drops of food coloring to the bottle (we like red, but any colour will
look great.) The drops will pass through the oil and then mix with the water
4. Break a seltzer tablet in half and drop the half tablet into the bottle. Watch it
sink to the bottom and let the blobby greatness begin!
5. To keep the effect going, just add another tablet piece. For a true lava lamp effect,
shine a flashlight through the bottom of the bottle.

Floating Egg

You Will Need:
• One egg
• Water
• Salt
• A tall drinking glass

How To:
1. Pour water into the glass until it is about half full.
2. Stir in lots of salt (about 6 tablespoons).
3. Carefully pour in plain water until the glass is nearly full (be careful to not disturb or
mix the salty water with the plain water).
4. Gently lower the egg into the water and watch what happens.

Dancing Raisins

You Will Need:
• A clear drinking glass half-filled with water
• About 1 Tbsp baking soda
• Enough vinegar to fill the remainder of the glass
• 3 raisins, cut or ripped in half
• A spoon

How To:
1. First, use your spoon to place about a tablespoon of baking soda into the glass halffilled with water. The exact amount is not important.
2. Stir the baking soda until it is dissolved in the water.
3. Drop the 6 raisin halves into the glass.
4. Next, pour some vinegar into the glass until it is about 3/4 full.
5. You may need to jostle the raisins a bit with your spoon to get them going. If this
doesn’t work, try adding a little more vinegar. If this still doesn’t work, try cutting the
raisins into smaller pieces to make them even lighter.
6. Watch in amazement as your raisins slowly rise to the surface, then fall back down,
over and over again.

Leakproof Bag Experiment

You Will Need:
• A zip lock bag
• Water
• Sharp pencils
How To:
1. Start by sharpening the pencils. Make sure the tips are sharpened to a point.
2. Fill the bag one-half full with water and then seal the bag closed. Pose this
question to your family: “What would happen if I tried to push one of these
pencils through the bag of water? Would the water leak out and make a giant
3. They’ll answer “yes,” unless they know the scientific secret, but you’re not
telling . . . yet!
Make sure the tips of the pencils are sharpened to a point. Be careful not to
push the pencils all the way through the holes or your “spear-it” experiment
will turn into a big “clean-it-up” activity.
4. Here comes the scary part. Hold the pencil in one hand and the top of the bag
in the other hand. Believe it or not, you can push the pencil right through one
side of the bag and halfway out the other side without spilling a drop. The long
chains of molecules that make up the bag magically seal back around the
pencil and prevent water from leaking out. Now, that’s the “Spear-It” of
science! Sound impossible? Try it—over the sink the first time and then over
your friend’s head . . . just for fun.
5. When you are finished, hold the bag over the sink or a bucket and remove the
pencils. Toss the bag in the recycling bin and dry the pencils.

Make your own Geysers

You Will Need:
• a roll of mint Mentos (6 Mentos per geyser is enough)
• a piece of paper
• a playing card or a business card
• a pair of goggles (lab coats are optional, but of course, stylish)
• a bottle of Coke Zero or Diet Coke (2-litre bottles are great)
• Tip: Make sure the coke is at room temperature.

How To:
1. Go outside where you can make a big mess.
2. Open the bottle of Coke and place it on the ground.
3. Put on your goggles. Be safe and look cool!
4. Roll the paper into a tube so that the Mentos will just fit inside.
5. Hold the tube of paper upright and put the card over the bottom of the tube.
6. Load 4-6 Mentos into the tube, holding the card so they don’t fall out.
7. Carefully hold the tube and card directly on top of the bottle, lining up the tube and
the mouth of the bottle.
8. Pull the card out from under the tube, letting the Mentos drop into the bottle.
