Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you all so much for making such a wonderful effort with lessons/activities at home during these difficult times. This is our last fortnightly plan for this school term and as we have said before, there is no pressure to get everything done, just do what you can.

Please email us at our school email addresses listed above if you have any questions about the work or if you would like to send any photographs of completed work/activities for the pupil’s section on the school website.

Finally, we would like to wish you all a healthy, safe and happy Summer and we look forward to seeing you all again in September.

Take care,

History

Tom Crean: A great Irish explorer.

Tom Crean was born in Co. Kerry in 1877. As a young boy he dreamed of one day becoming a sailor.

Tom’s first expedition was with Captain Robert Scott. Their aim was to be the first explorers to reach the South Pole. Along the way their ship got stuck in ice and their expedition failed. They tried again in 1911 on a ship called ‘The Terra Nova’. Captain Scott decided that only five men would complete the journey and Tom was not chosen.

In 1914 Tom joined Ernest Shackleton on his expedition to the Antarctic. Their mission was called ‘Endurance’ and their aim was to walk across Antarctica from coast to coast. During the trip, their ship got stuck in ice for almost ten months. They were miles off course and had no means of communication. Tom along with a few others headed back to South Georgia and were able to get help.

Questions:

1. Where was Tom Crean born?

2. Can you think of a synonym (word with a similar meaning) for the following word: Expedition
