Dear parents/ Guardians,

Please find below some 10/15 minute activities that can be completed with the boys from both junior and senior infants while the school is closed. You can choose a couple of activities each day.

Literacy:

  • Revise all sounds – s,a,t,I,p,n,c,k,e,h,r,m,d,g,o,u,l,f,b,j,w,x,y,z,qu,ck (junior infants)
  • Revise all sounds – ai, ee, or, ie, ng, oo, ch, sh, th, ou, oi, ue, er, ar, qu, ck. (senior infants)
  • Pick a sound and draw five things that begin with that sound.
  • Practice writing simple words using the sounds above – For example: cat, pen, dog, tent, pond etc. (junior infants) green, coat, pie, book, shop etc. (senior infants)
  • Word families – make as many words as they can from the different word families. Eg: at family – cat, mat, rat, hat, sat.
  • Word families – ug, in, it, ap, ut, at, un, an.
  • Practice tricky/dolch words
  • Put tricky/dolch words into sentences
  • Copying Tricky/dolch words
  • Tricky/dolch word hunt – pick a word and try and find it as many times as you can in a book.
  • Creating flash cards of the tricky/dolch words and creating a snap/ memory game.
  • Tricky word song – YouTube
  • Nursery rhymes on YouTube
  • Reading simple books
  • Sing the alphabet song.
  • Play I spy

 

 

Writing activities:

  • Practice writing all letters.
  • Practice writing simple words.
  • Sentence starters – Eg:  I can see the…, Look at the…., I like the……., This is a……  – get the boys to finish the sentence.
  • Copying tricky words
  • Writing letters
  • Description writing – Get the boys to pick something eg: a pig, a rocket, a car – write or say description sentences about the thing/object. Ask them for a colour sentence, a size sentence, a number sentence or a doing sentence.
  • Free writing – Aistear topics – Spring, the farm, the supermarket, the garden centre (junior infants) Space, the south pole, People who help us, The Lorax (senior infants)
  • Write their news.
  • Write a shopping list.
  • Draw favourite animal
  • Draw favourite toy
  • Keep a weather diary

 

 

 

Numeracy activities:

  • Shape hunt around the house – circle, triangles, squares, rectangles.
  • Make different patterns – using blocks.
  • Scavenger hunt around the house
  • Practice writing numbers 1-5 – junior infants
  • Practice writing numbers 1-10 – senior infants.
  • Number story 1- 5 – junior infants
  • Number story 1-10 – senior infants.
  • Sort your toys by colour, size, shape, length.
  • Play shop with money. (up to 5c for juniors, up to 10c for seniors)
  • Practice counting groups of objects up to 10 (junior infants) and up to 20 (senior infants).
  • Roll two dice and add the numbers together.
  • The singing walrus – days of the week, months of the year – YouTube.

 

General activities:

  • Make a jigsaw
  • Easter art

  • Using junk art to make buildings
  • Making cards
  • Build something
  • Play with play doh
  • Take a go noodle break.
