Ms Drummey’s Literacy Intervention Group

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Once again, I hope everyone is keeping safe and well. I hope the boys are feeling safe and happy and are coping well in these unprecedented times. We’re all missing being in school. Please find enclosed work for the period 18/05/20-29/05/20.  You can choose to complete a few topics/activities a day. Please do not feel under pressure to complete all activities as I know households can be extremely busy. I do not want either yourselves or the boys to be feeling overwhelmed and stressed so please complete what suits you. Your wellbeing and that of the boys is the most important thing at this time. We will make every effort to catch up on the work that has been missed when we return to school. If you have any queries regarding this work please do not hesitate to contact me by email. Also, if the boys would like to email me a picture of any of the work that they have completed I would only be delighted to give them some feedback.

Kind Regards,

Ms Drummey

General Activities for the next two weeks:

Reading:

Please continue to read a book a day. The following link offers free ebooks. It will require you to register with the site. This is straight forward. You will be asked your name, email address and a password.

Collins Big Cat Books:

The following website has free books that are graded to suit all levels. It simply requires you to log in.

Steps to log in:

  1. Click teacher sign in.

  2. Username: parents@harpercollins.co.uk

  3. Password: Parents20!

  4. Click on Collins Big Cat

  5. On the left hand side of the page, there are band levels. You could start at yellow. If that is proving too difficult go back to Red B. If it is too easy, go to blue. Again use your own discretion to pick a level that enables your son to read as fluently as possible.

  6. It might be beneficial to mute the volume initially to get your son to read the book by himself and then unmute to hear the book being read.

  7. When you get to the end of the book, click on the orange circle and there is an online activity to check your child’s understanding of the story.

Note: If you would prefer to use books that you may have at home to read that’s perfectly fine. The most important thing is that the boys continue to practice their reading on a daily basis.

Sight Words:

We are currently working through these sight words in class. Continue to revise words  1-300

You will find flashcards for these words below.

1-100

101-200

 201-300

I have included a checklist for the words 1-300. This will help you track your child’s progress more effectively.

Simply date the top of the column when you give assessments.  With these forms, the boys can each work at their own level! If some of these words are proving challenging, cut back on the quantity.  Don’t be under pressure to rush through the words. Please go at your own child’s pace

Writing:

Continue with free writing 2-3 times a week
