Sample Narrative Story
Space Escape
Once upon a time a man called Max was in his sitting room reading the newspaper.
Max entered a competition to win a trip to space and he was the lucky winner. He departed from the space station in NASA. He was enjoying driving the spaceship for the first time. He could see all the planets and stars up close. Suddenly he noticed that his radar had stopped working.
Max could no longer see the map. When he looked up all he saw was red and brown. He was about to crash into mars.
Max remembered that his spaceship had an escape pod. He jumped into the escape pod.
Max landed safely back on Earth. He felt so lucky.

|
- Tables +4 (Play Table Champion at home)
- Skip counting in 3s, 5s, 6s. (It’s okay if child cannot skip count automatically, just remind them, for example, when skip counting in 6s, we just +6 each time)
- Revise Time-Look at 1 hour later/1 hour earlier than an O’ Clock or half past time (orally only)
- Master Your Maths 2 pages 6 and 7. Do 1 a day, Monday –Thursday. This is very similar to the boys Mental Maths that they normally have for homework. https://my.cjfallon.ie/preview/student/20355/8
Capacity-Information for Parents
When teaching capacity the following is the focus in 2nd Class-
- Recognising 1 Litre, ½ Litre and ¼ Litre.
- Children should know that two ½ Litres=1 Litre and that four ¼ Litres = 1 Litre. (revision of fractions maybe needed)
- Identify things that will hold about/less/more than 1 Litre, about/less/more than ½ Litre and hold about/more/less than ¼ Litre.
- Cracking Maths 2nd Class Chapter 37 Capacity pages 139-144. https://www.gillexplore.ie/products
(Having read the information above on what is to be taught in 2nd Class, allow the child to get a sense of 1Litre by seeing how many cups of water will fill a 1 Litre jug etc. Repeat the same activity for ½ Litre and ¼ Litre. Allow child to see how many ½ Litres will fill a 1 Litre jug. Allow child to see how many ¼ Litres will fill a 1 Litre jug. This is more important than completing these pages. Do not feel under pressure to complete all these pages, hands on activities are best to teach Capacity)
Maths Week 2
- Tables +5 and doubles up to 12+12=24 (Play Table Champion at home)
- Skip counting in 3s, 5s, 6s. (It’s okay if child cannot skip count automatically, just remind them for example when skip counting in 6s, we just +6 each time)
- Revise Time-Look at 1 hour later, 1 hour earlier than an O’ Clock or half past time(orally only)
- Master Your Maths 2 pages 8 and 9. Do 1 a day, Monday –Thursday. This is very similar to the boys Mental Maths that they normally have for homework. https://my.cjfallon.ie/preview/student/20355/10
- Revise or finish teaching Capacity from last week.
- Cracking Maths 2nd Class Chapter 30 Addition 4 pages 116-119. https://www.gillexplore.ie/products
The focus in this chapter is splitting a number into 10s and Units and then adding the tens and adding the units for example 24+35= 20 + 4+ 30 + 5= This is now an easier sum, add the big number first and then the units.
Irish Week 1 and 2
- Attached to this document I have included a powerpoint on “An Teilifís” and “Ag Siopadóireacht” which means Television and Shopping. I have included voiceovers with English explanations (hopefully they work!) Practice saying the words and phrases. The child can write out pages 11 and 13 from the powerpoint, filling in their answer.
If you cannot open my powerpoint, here is a link without the voiceovers. https://www.scoilnet.ie/browse-search/?q=*&fq=%7B!tag%3Dschool_grade%7Dschool_grade%3A2&fq=%7B!tag%3Dschool_discipline%7Dschool_discipline%3A47&fq=%7B!tag%3Dschool_topic%7Dschool_topic%3A507&fq=%7B!tag%3Dschool_subtopic%7Dschool_subtopic%3A188

Priest-The Lord be with you.
Children-And with your spirit.
Priest-Lift up your hearts.
Children-We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest-Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
Children-It is right and just.

Song
If you type in “Alive O 4 Happy in the Presence of the Lord” into youtube you can listen to the melody.
Happy in the Presence of the Lord
Chorus
Happy in the presence of the Lord,
We come and sing our praise to Lord Jesus,
Happy in the presence of the Lord,
We come and sing our praise to the Lord of all.
1. Come and share the bread of life,
Bread that will feed us,
Help and protect us,
Come and share the stories of old,
Stories of Jesus, his work and his world.
Chorus
2. Come and share the memories we’ve had,
Happy days, sad days, days full of joy,
Come to tell the Lord that we love,
We’ll live the life he told us to live.
Chorus
